A solid-state transformer (SST), also known as a "smart transformer," is a modern electrical energy device that provides bidirectional power flow. It is a high-power semiconductor component that is a combination of control circuits and conventional high-frequency transformers, providing reactive power compensation, harmonic suppression and other functions. Solid-state transformers meet a wide range of application needs, from alternative power generation to traction locomotives, power grids and the power industry, among others. Solid-state transformers have a wide range of applications and, in addition to voltage conversion, facilitate a smooth transition from AC to DC and from DC to AC . However, alternative power generation is the most important application of solid-state transformers, and many of the advantages of solid-state transformers come from the reduction in size. Today, installing transformers is not an easy task. Considerations such as transportation, site preparation, installation and transfer costs all increase the budget. In contrast, smaller, cheaper solid-state transformers can be relatively easily installed in small solar farms or storage bins. Faster switching speeds for solid-state devices will in turn make it easier for utilities to handle the multiple types of power supplies fed into the grid, as you will have more transformers to control and fine-tune power quality.
